Music Monday: Deer Tick

The Rhode Island band Deer Tick has quickly become one of my current favourite bands. Their sound is a mix of folk, blues, country and rock. The band started out as a solo project with founding and lead guitar and singer John J. McCauley III and grew into a now 5 member band including: Christopher Dale Ryan (bass, vocals), Dennis Ryan (drums, vocals), Ian O'Neil(guitar, vocals), Rob Crowell (keyboard). The band currently has four albums out: War Elephant (2007), Born on Flag Day (2009), The Black Dirt Sessions (2010) and Divine Providence (2011).

I've been dying to see Deer Tick live, I'm just 'patiently' waiting for a Canadian tour date. Here is a small taste of what I mean by a wicked band they are. Here is my current favourite song Miss K from the album Divine Providence (2011)

Adventures in Lake Louise

As you can see from my lack of blogging, I rarely have any leisure time since I've started working. Paul and I haven't had a single day off together and it's became stressful, it's as if we are still long distance! I had to beg to get the time off, but when it was confirmed, Paul and I booked a two day trip to Lake Louise.

This was the view from our hotel room on the first day. We knew the view was going to be nice, but we probably got one of the best views in the hotel. We were hoping to go for a canoe ride while we were here but we arrived to a frozen lake!

On our reservation I commented that Paul and I were celebrating our one year anniversary. We were greeted with a complimentary bottle of champagne and a note that congratulated "Mr. and Mrs. Martin". Now I can't stop calling Paul, Mr. Martin. Looks like he will be taking my last name when we actually get married.
We indulged on a dinner that cost us a pretty penny. I came to realize that wiener schnitzel isn't as appetizing as it sounds. Unfortunately for us, the two days we booked at the hotel were the two days the hotel was going through major renovations so we didn't get the dining experience we had hoped for, but we still enjoyed this restaurant.
This is the view from our hotel room on the second day. In just one day the entire lake melted!

The second day we went sight seeing around Lake Louise and Yoho National Park (which now happens to be Paul and I's new favourite national park).

The second night Paul and I went to bed extremely early because we both became ill. We're still fighting off our sickness. Overall, it was nice to spend some quality time together since we haven't been able to since I've gotten here.

BEARS

I hope to be able to share more adventures with you, I haven't even been able to go on a decent hike since I've been here! All I seem to do is work. I hope to share some more adventures with you all soon!

Things That Make Me Happy

For the past few months, I have been stressed beyond belief. Work, school and personal matters have just been piling up and sometimes as much as you want to look at the bright side, it's nearly impossible. I'm what they call a worry wart because I tend to worry about stuff more than others. I'm not kidding when I say I worry ten times as hard as a normal person worries, I was literally having heart palpitations after first semester's exams. I also get to carry a handy dandy puffer for when I have panic attacks, it's the Virgo in me. As much of an optimist I try to be, I can be pretty pessimistic. Paul is going to kill me if he sees that I posted this on my blog (I LOVE YOU) but I found something of his that truly melted my heart when we first started dating. I know you're not supposed to creep someone's journal but it was just open, and there and staring me right in the face begging me to read it. Anyways, it wasn't exactly a diary entry but a list of a hundred things that make him happy, and the list continues to grow. The first thing on his list was new socks, which made me laugh so I made sure to buy him new socks for Christmas. You don't necessarily have to have the things that make you happy, or be doing the things you make you happy, but simply imagining things that make you happy can instantly improve your mood. It's the equivalent of imagining a hot summer beach in the middle of winter can warm you up. I was inspired to write this post after reading this post on Because Shanna Said So. Here is a list of things that make me happy and I would encourage all you bloggers to link up with a list of things that make you happy as well!

Weekly Roundup

Happy Sunday everyone! The weather here in Jasper has been crazy. My first day here it was snowing, literally a blizzard outside around -7 degrees Celsius. A week later it was around 26 degrees Celsius, sunny with not a cloud in the sky, and now it is raining and miserable. I have been in Jasper for two weeks and I've only had one day off, I really wish I was able to relax and enjoy the mountains as much as I would like, but I can't complain about all the money I'm currently making. Here is today's weekly roundup:

Jasper Life So Far

I have been working non stop. This has literally been my first day off since I've got here! The past two months have been the most hectic months ever. Final projects, exams, travelling, work, this is probably the first day off I've had in two months! I love it here in Jasper and Paul and I couldn't be any happier. Here are some pictures of my adventure so far:

On the way to Jasper we stopped in Edmonton to this restaurant Sugarbowl. Chicken and waffles is now easily my new favourite meal.

 King of the castle
The lake is still frozen at Maligne Lake. I can't wait until it unfreezes so I can canoe. This is where the famous Spirit Island is located.
Doe a deer a female deer.

I will have more updates soon! Can't wait to share my adventures with you.
