Flickr Favourite

Today I want to show you one of my favourite photographers I have had the opportunity of finding on flickr: Chris Arnade. I usually like to keep my posts positive and light-hearted but what this man does is too amazing not to share. His work really has me believe that my life is truly blessed compared to what these people have to endure. I hope sharing with you his beautiful photography will have you thankful for your life as well.

Chris Arnade isn't your typical street photographer. He is a previous wall street trader with a PhD in Physics and has left that previous life to pursue story-telling of the harsh realities of living and addiction in the ghettos of New York.

I myself coming straight from a suburban, conservative border-line sheltered community, I have not the slightest clue the extremities these people have to endure everyday just to get by. I have been fortunate enough to live a blessed life and I in no way have the right to judge anybody else's story. A photograph can say a 1000 words and you can truly sympathize with these people just by staring into their eyes. Some of these stories are truly heartbreaking; I have come to tears in many. He also follows closely to a few residents in these communities where you become deeply sympathetic to their personal conditions. Many of the people featured have drug addictions, sexually transmitted diseases are homeless etc., My personal favourite photo stream set of is The Transexuals of Queens. This set focuses on the night-life of transexuals on the streets of Jackson Heights, Queens, New York. My favourite person to follow in his photos is this beautiful woman named Egypt.

This photograph is titled Egypt in rain: Hunts Point, Bronx

The background story Chris Arnade provides:

Egypt was cold, tired, and hungry. She stood disoriented in the rain, her hand clutched hard a few dimes she had begged.
“I kicked my husband out. Now I got to worry. He racked up all these debts with dealers. The niggers want to collect from me. I am cutting him off. He can’t buy on my name no more.”
We moved inside a deli to buy her a sandwich. She ate it in my car, shivering. “Only time he comes to me is when he is dope sick, for me to suck some dick, for me to cop him some drugs. I say to him, ‘Why don’t you suck dick? Why don’t you sell your ass? Hell, let men fuck you.’ I am sick of it. Sick of getting beat by him.”
“My mother died in 2002, Dec 23rd. Anniversary is soon. Heroin overdose. My dad? Don’t care. Hopes he rots in hell. Started raping me when I was three. Did my mom know? Not about him. She knew about my uncle and cousin. They did the same.”
I asked her, has a man in your life ever treated you right, ever not beat or raped you? She looked down at her sandwich, her face blank. “Yes. One has. God.”
I myself am not an extremely religious person or follow any organized religion but I do clarify myself as a spiritual person. This story of Egypt and what she has had to overcome in her life is tremendous. The fact that this woman has any faith in anything at all is truly remarkable. A beautiful and strong woman is an understatement.
Thanks to Chris Arnade for sharing with the world the true realities of their life. I hope his work helps society think twice about judging the lives of others.

Music Monday: Chantilly

Happy Monday everyone! Today for Music Monday I am talking about fellow blogger Chantilly. I have been following her blog for a while now and I was fortunate enough to win a giveaway where I received two of her EPs (Up To The Moon and Caught Light

I have listened to her music before and when I received her albums I haven't been able to stop listening to her! What You Do To Me is my favourite song from her, I have pretty much memorized the lyrics. I keep trying to figure out who she reminds me of but I realized she has this very original sound with a collaboration of female vocalist influences in her voice. Her music is extremely refreshing, relaxing and hard to not fall in love with.

Weekly Roundup

What a week I've had! On Wednesday night a friend and I went to a bar in Hamilton and let's just say I don't remember too much, but apparently I had fun. I better of had fun for what I had to deal with the next morning. On Friday night the same friend and I went to go see a few local bands play at a rock n' roll bar in Hamilton. I fortunately remember that I had an amazing night and I bought a lot of vintage finds and listened to some great music. I really need to catch up on some homework though!!! This week is Paul's birthday the old man is turning 23! I'm sad I won't be able to spend his birthday with him in Jasper and I hope his birthday gift arrives to him by then! Happy Birthday Paul!

This week's finds:

TO EAT
I love asparagus. Love love love love love. It's weird because I was never forced to eat asparagus when I was a kid, my mom just never made it. But now I'm obsessed with asparagus. Check out this basic asparagus recipe.

Friday Frugal Fashion Find: Love Culture

A few days ago I stumbled upon Love Culture this amazing online (so I thought) store. Turns out they have stores across the United States! Little Canadian girl like me has never heard of them but I'm so happy I found it! It has the CUTEST stuff for the BEST prices. Their products are very similar to Forever 21. I'm having difficulties showing you only a few of my favourite items since I want to buy the entire fricken' store.

ABC's About Me

I've been seeing About Me survey's going around the blogosphere so I thought I would hop on the bandwagon and let you learn a little more about the face behind Oh Summer Candy.

A - Age: 19
B - Bed size: Twin (Not happy about it)
C - Chore you hate: Dishes... I'm literally terrified of doing them. I'm actually scared of spoons so I have to buy plastic spoons (I know terrible for the environment but I make up for it by doing other environmentally friendly things) But I avoid doing the dishes as much as I possibly can
D - Drink of choice: Beer
E - Essential start to your day item: Toothbrush. My breath is bad in the morning.
F - Favorite color: Purple
G - Gold or Silver: Gold
H - Height: 5'5"
I - Instruments you play(ed): I used to play the piano, drums and clarinet.
J - Job: Student... if you can find me a job let me know.
K - Kids: None. But when I do have kids I'm going to name one Vienna and the other River (assuming I'll have a girl and a boy)
L - Living arrangements: Student house. Originally there was 7 of us (3 boys, 4 girls) 1 girl moved out, and I rarely see the other 2 girls anymore. So pretty much living with 3 boys right now.
M - Mom's name: Joanne
N - Nicknames: Scum, Scummer, Scumbag (yes those are my most common nicknames), Sumbum, Winter, Spring, Fall
O - Overnight hospital stay other than birth: Fortunately never!
P - Pet Peeve: PEOPLE WHO ARE LATE. I hate tardiness, I hate when people say they will be somewhere at a certain time and aren't, like they think their time is more precious than everyone else's. My biggest pet peeve.
Q - Quote from a movie:? "It's not goodbye, it's see yeah later" - John Q (That one is for Paul)
R - Right or left handed: Right hand (means I'll live longer than you left handers HA)
S - Siblings: 2 Brothers Shawn and Dallas (Yes we are named Summer, Dallas and then.... Shawn)
T - Time you wake up: Depends on what time I have school, on weekends usually around 10:30
U- Underwear: If I have to
V - Vegetable you dislike: Peppers
W - What makes you run late: Like I said, I hate people who are late so I'm rarely ever late. If I am late I make sure that person knows why. Since I usually take city transportation it's usually a problem with the bus's so technically it's not my fault.
X - X-rays you've had: One time when I was 8 I did a bunch of cartwheels and then landed on my fingers so I had to get it checked out.
Y - Yummy food you make: I'm a TERRIBLE cook. I can't make anything. I make a good peanut butter and jelly sandwich I guess.
Z - Zoo favorite: Monkeys!! I used to be obsessed with monkey's. You should see my childhood collection of monkey stuffed animals.

Now you know a little more about me!

Music Monday: Funeral Song

Ok this topic may sound extremely depressing, but I think everyone has thought about it once in their life, "What song do I want to play at my funeral?" I have had this song chosen probably since the day I first heard it. This is one of my all time favourite songs and I don't think I've been able to listen to it without crying. I know I'm not going to die anytime soon (fingers crossed), but I know one thing is for sure that when I die I want to be known for my awesome taste in music. The song that I will be having played at my funeral (and for all friends and family members and for my future children who will read my blog keep note of this) is Trapeze Swinger - Iron and Wine. "Remember me ....." is beautiful, some may interpret this song as a love gone sour, but I have always interpreted this as someone passing and recalling fond memories. The use of religion symbolism is present which also makes it suitable for a funeral. Listen to the song and read the lyrics and the reasoning why I love this song so much and why it is such a perfect song will be self explanatory.

Please, remember me happily
By the rosebush laughing
With bruises on my chin, the time when
We counted every black car passing
Your house beneath the hill
And up until someone caught us in the kitchen
With maps, a mountain range, a piggy bank
A vision too removed to mention

But please, remember me fondly
I heard from someone you're still pretty
And then they went on to say
That the pearly gates
Had some eloquent graffiti
Like "We'll meet again" and "Fuck the man"
And "Tell my mother not to worry"
And angels with their great handshakes
Were always done in such a hurry

And please, remember me that Halloween
Making fools of all the neighbors
Our faces painted white
By midnight, we'd forgotten one another
And when the morning came I was ashamed
Only now it seems so silly
That season left the world and then returned
And now you're lit up by the city

So please, remember me mistakenly
In the window of the tallest tower
Calling passers-by but much too high
To see the empty road at happy hour
Gleam and resonate, just like the gates
Around the holy kingdom
With words like "Lost and found" and "Don't look down"
And "Someone save temptation"

And please, remember me as in the dream
We had as rug-burned babies
Among the fallen trees and fast asleep
Aside the lions and the ladies
That called you what you like and even might
Give a gift for your behavior
A fleeting chance to see a trapeze
Swinger high as any savior

But please, remember me, my misery
And how it lost me all I wanted
Those dogs that love the rain and chasing trains
The colored birds above their running
In circles around the well and where it spells
On the wall behind St. Peter
So bright, on cinder gray, in spray paint
"Who the hell can see forever?"

And please, remember me seldomly
In the car behind the carnival
My hand between your knees, you turned from me
And said, "The trapeze act was wonderful
But never meant to last", the clown that passed
Saw me just come up with anger
When it filled with circus dogs, the parking lot
Had an element of danger

So please, remember me finally
And all my uphill clawing
My dear, but if I make the pearly gates
I'll do my best to make a drawing
Of God and Lucifer, a boy and girl
An angel kissing on a sinner
A monkey and a man, a marching band
All around a frightened trapeze swinger

Is there a song you hope to play at your funeral?

Sunday Weekly Roundup

Hey everyone! I hope everyone had a fantastic week. My weekend wasn't as good as I had planned.. but they can't all be good right? I'm just sick and tired of people looking down on me because my University Major doesn't involve creating nuclear bombs. I am proud of being a Communications major and it will take me to a career that I want to do. People in other programs who call me stupid or that my opinions are irrelevant because I am in this program really need to check themselves. I work just as hard as you do, my opinions are just as relevant or more relevant because I learn about real-life knowledge opposed to formulas and equations. Sorry rant over, but I'm sick of it. Not to mention I've just had a brutal week so anyone who says one bad thing to me right now is going to hear thunder.

Here is today's weekly roundup:

Frugal Fashion Find: Tobi

Ahhh the weekend. Yesterday I got the chance to meet up with a friend from Jasper where we went to see Gangster Squad (Ryan Gosling, yummy) and Sean Penn, it was really well done; if you like action like me I would definitely recommend it. After the movie, we went out to the pub for a drink and some chats, I hadn't seen her in a while and it was awesome to catch up! Today I plan on doing homework (yawn) and then going out for a friend's birthday. This weekend shall be a one to remember!

For today's Frugal Fashion Find, I was recently introduced to the shop Tobi. I don't think I have ever stumbled upon an online shop with GREATER sale deals....
- 30% off new items everyday

Splurge + Save: Mint Shoulder Bags

It's time for another Frugal Friday Find: Splurge + Save. Today's splurge + save are mint handbags. Mint is the popular colour trend currently in the fashion world and I myself have been searching for the perfect mint shoulder bag, and I'm in luck! If you are willing to cough up an entire two months rent you can buy yourself a Anya Hindmark Leather Shoulder Bag. I find it quite ridiculous how someone is willing to spend $955 for something that carries your money (as cute as it may be) but I don't have $955 lying around. Chicnova has an adorable Mint Shoulder bag for a mere $58 (which is usually still out of my tight student budget). And if you are like me and need to go even cheaper, I found an even more inexpensive Mint Shoulder bag from Target which is affordable and cute.

What are you willing to spend on a cute shoulder bag?

Etsy Love: Modern Girl Blitz

A blog that I recently stumbled upon and fell in love with instantly is a feminist themed store Modern Girl Blitz. The owner of the shop Midge Blitz (awesome name) is a feminist herself and has focused her life on the empowerment of women. She creates buttons, zines, tote bags, patches etc. The design of her items are targeted for all of the outspoken feminists. Her items are extremely inexpensive for all you frugal feminists! Here are a few of my favourite items:
